Michael Otomo

Welcome to Part 9 of the J Robinson Intensive Camps Black Hat Award Interview Series! Our ninth interview will be with Michael Otomo, a Black Hat Winner from our 10-Day Iowa Intensive Camp from Eyota, Minnesota.

What was your favorite part of camp and why did you choose to come here?

Sleeping and chilling with my roommate Cael that also won the Black Hat. I came here because I wanted to get better.

Who is a role model that you look up to and why?

My role model is Jordan Burroughs. He’s hard working and has high goals in life.

What/who is your inspiration to wrestle and why?

My mom and my dad. They’ve done so much for me, so I have to give them something in return and that is a state title.

What is the most valuable thing you learned at camp?

Work hard every day and take it 1 practice at a time.

What's the most important quality that a successful wrestler must have?

Mental toughness and dedication.

To improve as a person I need to…

Use what J taught me at this camp and use it every day.

What was the hardest thing about camp?

Doing the workouts while my body was sore.

What advice would you give to a future camper?

Come in shape before the camp and take it 1 practice at a time. Also, take naps in between sessions.

What makes wrestling different from other sports/activities you participate in?

The grind. It’s only you and your opponent out on the mat and the better guy wins.

Who was your favorite coach at camp and why?

Jordan Rothers. We were always making jokes towards each other.
