Spencer Woods

Welcome to Part 7 of the J Robinson Intensive Camps Black Hat Award Interview Series! This season, we will be hosting short Google Hangout interviews with each of our 16 Black Hat Winners from this past summer. Our winners come from states across the country, and our fifth interview will be with Spencer Woods, a senior wrestler and 2X State Champion (2015 & 2016) from Kotzebue High School in Kotzebue, Alaska. Spencer attended our 28-Day Intensive Camp in 2013, and won the Black Hat Award at our 14-Day Pennsylvania Intensive Camp in 2015.

What was your favorite part of camp and why did you choose to come here?

Red Flag days because they were so challenging.

Who is a role model that you look up to and why?

I look up to my teammates, Joshua Roetman, because he is supportive, caring, and is always trying to get me to be better.

What/who is your inspiration to wrestle and why?

I wrestle because it is rewarding. It is not a team sport. It’s my will against his, and when he breaks I smile.

What is the most valuable thing you learned at camp?

Hard work always pays off.

What's the most important quality that a successful wrestler must have?

The ability to adapt to any conditions.

What was the hardest thing about camp?

Not getting a lot of sleep.

What advice would you give to a future camper?

Be ready to change.

What makes wrestling different from other sports/activities you participate in?

You have to have more than talent and physical ability. You have to have heart.

Who was your favorite coach at camp and why?

Joe Nord. He saw what I needed to work on and helped me fix it.
