Most high school seasons are past the halfway point of the season. There is no longer that feeling of looking ahead to a long season, the season-ending tournaments are right around the corner!
There is still time to turn things around or build on recent successes. Your attitude and outlook on a day-to-day basis are major factors for finishing the season strong; and attitude is completely under your control. A few bullet points to guide you the rest of the season.
- Identify your strengths and build upon them. What has worked well for you so far this season? All wrestlers have to continue to learn new things and progress, but start to dial in on your go-to moves, techniques and tactics to make them unstoppable. Get those reps in and focus on the small details.
- One day at a time. When the end is in sight, some of us tend to put it in neutral and coast to the end--don't let it happen. Bring the intensity and attention to every workout, you owe it to yourself to get a little better every day. Narrow your focus: win every sprint, score last, make the first move off bottom, win every short go in practice. All these small victories and one day progressions will add up and push you over the hump when it matters most.
- Keep it fresh. A season of 7:00AM lifting and 3:00PM practice can become mind-numbing, make sure to vary your workouts a bit to keep things positive and upbeat. Don't throw the whole plan out the window, but change up a few workouts here and there. Wrestle some live situations starting in different positions, don't just run 2 miles and lift--do a sprint or explosion workout followed by a buddy partner body weight lift. Find some new workouts to challenge yourself and keep your mind and body sharp. *Speaking of keeping it fresh, don't forget about your hygiene and skin care! When was the last time you disinfected your headgear, washed your kneepads, cleaned your wrestling shoes???
Stay on top of your nutrition and overall health to stay prepared for the end of the year push to tournament time.
